The October, 2013 roll-out of the new health insurance marketplace, healthcare.gov is still a fresh memory (or nightmare) in our minds. The slow up-take for enrollees to even gain access to the site had many people speculating that the coverage deadline would be extended – but it’s not. The public marketplace, healthcare.gov is only open for enrollment until March 31st. If you or someone you know is in need of health insurance coverage and could qualify for a subsidy, the time to enroll is NOW!
Why Should You #GetCovered?
Those who do not have qualifying health insurance as of March 31, 2014 will be subject to penalties: $95 for an individual, $285 per family or 1% of your income, whichever is greater for 2014. Those amounts will increase in 2015 and 2016.
Politics and personal feelings aside, there were many good changes that came out of the Affordable Care Act. Before, insurance companies could deny coverage if you had a pre-existing condition, or place caps on benefits it would pay. But not anymore. At AW Welt Ambrisco, we’ve always looked at insurance as a promise – you pay a premium in return for the promise that you will have coverage when you need it; not, when you need it as long as it’s not a pre-existing condition, or when you need it up to a certain dollar amount. Now, you pay the premium, you are guaranteed coverage. It is important to note that the amount of use or benefits that are paid out is reflected in the premiums you pay in. This is called risk, and it works the same way for your home or auto insurance. You have a claim or two that the insurance company pays out, your premiums will most likely go up. This is to ensure that the insurance company is not paying more for your care than you are paying into your coverage. Sure, no one likes to have high premiums, but it’s a great start to help all of us become better consumers of our health care. Maybe instead of going to the ER for our flu symptoms, we’ll consider a quick care clinic or our regular physician – they will do the same tests, and provide comparable levels of care, but the costs are dramatically different.
How Do You Know Which Plan to Pick?
With all the options available to you, we recommend sitting down with a licensed and marketplace-certified insurance agent. We can help you find the plan that not only meets your budget, but one that also meets your needs. We’ve already heard stories of people who have shopped on the own, chose the cheapest plan only to find that their network is different and their regular doctor is no longer covered under their new plan. And to make matters worse, plan changes are only available when the marketplace reopens on November 15, 2014 or if they qualify for a Special Enrollment Opportunity with a qualifying life event.
At AW Welt Ambrisco, we have 4 marketplace-certified experts available to help you find the coverage you need. Call us today to schedule an appointment to #GetCovered before March 31st! (319) 887-3700, or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
What Happens if You Miss the March 31st Deadline?
You can still get covered after the March 31st deadline if you qualify for a Special Enrollment Opportunity. The list of qualifying life events is available on our website.
No matter which marketplace you’re shopping, the independent agents at AW Welt Ambrisco can help you find the coverage you need! Call us today (319) 887-3700 or email email@example.com for more information or to schedule an appointment.
